The jazz ballad is a sentimental narrative adagio akin to a blues song. The regrets of love gone wrong provide the elements of the ballad called a 'torch song.' By extension, any popular song with a slow beat is termed a 'ballad.' In modern music, a song called a ballad is one which tells a story but may not follow any of the other conventions.

A ballad is a form of verse, frequently a narrative set to music. Ballads were especially characteristic of Irish and British popular poetry and song between the later medieval period and the 19th.   The ballad's emphasis is on fast-paced action. There is no time for the niceties of description, sentiment, explanation or motivation -- leave all that to Henry James and Virginia Woolf -- .

This is a collection of ballads, edited, with an introduction and notes by Andrew Lang. The ballads range widely in style, from the historic to the romantic, from the short to the epic, from Scotland to France. Some of the material is the fabric of well-known fairy-tales, others 4/5(1). The artwork is lovely and I liked Charles Vess' style, but the storytelling is lacking, resulting in a bunch of scattered autoconclusive stories that read disjointed and uneven because they're too independent from each other, and there's no theme /5.
